Oct. 3, 1921 — Sept. 30, 2013
Former Corvallis resident Marion Louise (Carson) Bacon, 91, died the morning of Sept. 30, 2013, at the Capital Manor retirement community in Salem.
Born at Seattle’s Swedish Hospital, Marion was raised in Tacoma, Wash., and attended Horace Mann Elementary and Jason Lee Intermediate schools prior to graduating from Lincoln High School in 1940. When at Lincoln, she was senior class president, and did a little tap-dancing and baton-twirling on the side.
At 15, Marion met A.V.H. (Meric) Bacon Jr., then a student at Tacoma’s Stadium High School, and married him upon his graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1943. Thereafter, Marion raised her family in Hawaii, Florida, England, Rhode Island, Virginia, California, Oregon and New Zealand.
Having attended the College of Puget Sound prior to marriage, Marion later graduated from Oregon State University in 1978, when her children were of an age to fend for themselves.
She was a proud and loving Navy wife, imaginative mother, brilliant seamstress, lover of all things Sinatra, and a great reader whose own writing in many letters to friends and family displayed her fine intelligence and sharp wit. She also played a mean game of gin rummy.
Marion was preceded in death by her husband and by her eldest son, Kelly. She is survived by her children Casey Bacon of Tacoma, Marlo Greenhough of Wellington, New Zealand, Kenneth Bacon of Mill Creek, Wash., Andrew Bacon of Denver, Colo., Meredith Cornelius of Nelson, New Zealand, and Laurie Ann Barber of North Andover, Mass.; as well as eight grandchildren and newly minted great-grandchild, Sam.
Donations in Marion’s memory can be made to the Kelly G. Bacon Ethics in Civics Scholarship Fund in care of the OSU Foundation, 830 S.W. 35th St., Corvallis, OR 97333, or through the OSU Foundation website at www.osufoundation.org.
